There were 1300 robberies from the start of July to the end of September 2010 - which is about 14 robberies a day.

Nearly $9M was stolen of which only $1M was recovered (only $1M, really?). Conspiciously missing from the report are how many of the 1300 robbers were caught.

Over half of all the robberies used demand notes.

Based on the ‘Security Devices Used During Crimes’ a robber has these odds:

• 1-in-24 chance of being given a ‘tracking device’
• 1-in-10 chance of being given a ‘dye pack’
• 1-in-3 chance of being given ‘bait money’
• Guaranteed to be photographed

The FBI’s latest report once again confirms that demand notes still top the list for bank robbery - used in over half of all robberies.  Dye packs handed over in only 12% of the robberies. The same percent (12%) didn’t have video surveillance cameras either. Monday and Friday mornings are the most popular times to rob banks.

Out of the 1,160 robberies so far in 2010, over half used bank notes. Compared to the same time last year, there is a shift towards the 3-6pm hours for robberies. While Fridays remain the top day choice for robbers, Tuesdays seem to be growing in popularity.

Robbers stole a total of $12M from banks in 2008, of which only $2M was recovered.  Most of these robberies occur on Tuesday or Thursday mornings between 9 and 11am. Lots of data here. The number one modus operandi? Demand notes were used in more than half.
